Advocacy and Legislation - The Heart of BPW

BPW Louisiana legislative priorities fall under four major categories-- pay equity, work-life balance, women veterans, and retirement security.  For more information about individual bills in each of these focus areas.

Since the inception of Business & Professional Women USA in 1919, legislative issues have been the center of the mission for the organization.  Some of the many bills passed that were lobbied for by BPW include:

  • Women's Right to Vote Act - 1920
  • Equal Pay Act - 1961
  • Title IX banning sex discrimination in schools - 1972
  • Family Medical Leave Act - 1993
  • Violence Against Women Act - 1994
  • The Debbie Smith Act to provide funding for improved DNA evidence - 2004.
  • Johanna's Law authorizing nation gynecologic cancer early detection campaign - 2005.
  • Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (2009)

Many other bills are currently being discussed, lobbied for, and voted on for the betterment of the women of our country.  You, as a member of BPW, have a voice in Congress on the issues that affect all women everywhere.
